The Countries of Europe

Map Quiz

Do you know all six European microstates? Can you tell Slovenia from Slovakia? European political geography is old (and new) and complicated. Let's learn about it!

Europe is the 2nd smallest continent, just larger than Australia. It covers about 10.18MM sq. km (3.93MM sq. mi) — or 6.8% of the Earth's land area, and is home to about 741 million people according to 2016 estimates.

The largest city in Europe is Istanbul, home to over 15 million people. While most of Turkey does not fall within Europe, Istanbul straddles the Bosporus, a strait connecting the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara and by extension the Aegean and Mediterranean, which is part of the traditional boundary between Europe and Asia. This makes Istanbul the world's most significant transcontinental city. The most populous city entirely within Europe is Moscow, with a population of more than 13 million.

This quiz includes 44 sovereign states and one disputed territory (The Republic of Kosovo).
