The Caribbean is a region of the Americas southeast of the Gulf of Mexico. The area includes more than 7000 islands, islets, reefs and cays, and is home to about 43.6 million people. The largest metropolitan area in the Caribbean is Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, home to over 3.6 million people according to 2015 estimates.
